L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti Should Stay Home and Focus On Homeless Crisis

In News by Housing Is A Human Right

With Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announcing today that he won’t run for president in 2020, Housing Is A Human Right strongly urges him to double his efforts in addressing Los Angeles’ homeless and housing affordability crises. Too many lives hang in the balance to do anything else.

“Mayor Garcetti traveled all over the United States exploring a presidential bid,” says Rene Moya, director of Housing Is A Human Right. “At the same time, in 2017 and 2018, more than 1,200 homeless men, women, and children died on the streets in L.A. County, many of them in the city of Los Angeles. Homelessness kills. It’s time for the mayor to stay home in L.A., roll up his sleeves, and fix our lethal homeless crisis.”

Los Angeles also ranks in the Top 10 least affordable housing markets in the entire world. Middle- and working-class Angelenos are getting slammed by L.A.’s housing affordability crisis. The mayor should get to work on that — but with solutions that help working people, not just enrich corporate developers and landlords.

“Mayor Garcetti must promote and implement housing policies that protect tenants, preserve existing affordable, and produce truly affordable housing,” says Moya. “He has no time to waste.”
